3 Common Problems With Semi Trucks Drivers Should Know About

The last thing you want to worry about when your fleet is out making shipments is one of your semi-trucks breaking down. Regular wear and tear can cause semi-truck breakdowns and other issues at the most inconvenient times.

Fortunately, you can reduce the risk of a semi-truck breakdown by recognizing their most common causes. Here are three common problems with semi-trucks that drivers ought to know about and how you can avoid them with your own trucks.

  1. Oil leaks and burning. Oil leaks can cause a whole slew of problems. Your engine relies on oil to run. That means oil leaks reduce the amount of oil in your truck and cause your engine to burn. A burning engine causes serious damage to the rest of your truck engine components. That said, a simple oil leak can quickly turn into an expensive engine replacement if you're not careful. Keep an eye out on your truck's oil pressure and have your oil changed regularly. If there are any oil spots when you park your truck, be sure to have it checked out as soon as possible to prevent engine failure.

  2. Alternator problems and battery faults. Common signs of an alternator problem are your truck's lights flickering when you're isle and having issues turning the engine over when your truck has been parked for an extended period of time. Alternator problems and battery failure can be a major issue when you're out making a run. Replace your alternator or battery as soon as you start to notice that it's starting to struggle.

  3. Malfunctioning radiators. Your semi-truck needs to be able to cool its engine down. If it can't, your truck will overheat and break down on the side of the road. What's more, just like in the case of an oil leak, an overheating engine can cause serious damage to the engine components. This could mean more than just a few simple repairs. You could be looking at a tow with an engine replacement. To avoid issues with your truck's radiator, be sure that your radiator fluids are topped off and that you have a mechanic check out your truck the second a check engine light comes on.
